Business leaders and aspiring negotiators!

I was recently asked by LinkedIn Team Management to comment on an article they created about negotiating. It inspired me to expand on my comments and share from my experience. After all Sales is Negotiations, but controlling the negotiations is essential. So here is something I think will benefit everyone from founders to mothers and fathers and aspiring sales people.

“Sales Is Negotiations… controlled negotiations.”

Negotiation is a crucial skill that can make or break a team’s success. As a seasoned business leader, I’ve had my fair share of negotiations, and today, I’m excited to share some effective strategies for team leaders and members.

ONE. Firstly, it’s important to approach negotiations with a positive mindset. Negotiations are not a battle, but a collaborative effort to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome. Keeping this in mind will help team members stay calm, focused and open to different perspectives.

TWO. An effective negotiation strategy is to understand the other party’s interests and needs. Team leaders should encourage their members to listen carefully to the other party and ask open-ended questions to gain a better understanding of their goals. This approach will help build rapport and trust, leading to a more successful negotiation.

THREE. Another useful strategy is to prioritize objectives and know when to compromise. It’s essential to identify the most important objectives and be willing to compromise on less crucial ones. This approach will help team members stay focused and prevent negotiations from becoming bogged down with minor details.

One example of effective negotiation in action was when my team was negotiating a contract with a vendor. The vendor was reluctant to meet our pricing requirements, so we took a step back and identified their priorities. We discovered that they were concerned about their profit margins and the quality of their product. We then proposed a win-win solution that met both our pricing needs and their concerns, resulting in a successful negotiation.

In summary, effective negotiation strategies involve approaching negotiations with a positive mindset, understanding the other party’s interests, prioritizing objectives, and knowing when to compromise. By using these techniques, team leaders and members can negotiate successfully and achieve their desired outcomes. So go forth and negotiate with confidence, my fellow business leaders!
